Best known for his role as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II, Winston Churchill was born on November 30, 1874, to Lord Randolph Churchill and Jenny Jerome. As a youth, Churchill received his education at a preparatory school and at the Harrow Academy. He attended college at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.
In his early 20s, Winston Churchill commenced his career as a soldier-journalist. By the start of the 20th century, he had covered the Spanish Army in Cuba, the Malakand Field Force in India, and the reconquest of the Sudan. Additionally, he joined the British armed forces in South Africa as they fought against the Dutch army in the Boer War. During this period, he escaped from a South African prison.
Following this portion of his life, Churchill was elected to the House of Commons. He served intermittently for over 60 years.
